B.A. in Secondary Education | English (9-12)
Inspire the Next Generation of Teachers with the Power of Language and Literature
The English (9-12) Secondary Education major is your pathway to shaping young minds through the power of language and literature. This program combines a robust foundation in English studies with specialized training to prepare you for teaching English language arts in Illinois secondary schools. Designed to meet CAEP/NCTE and Illinois Content Area Standards for Educators, the program equips you with the skills to inspire critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication in your students. With additional coursework in the Education Division's Secondary Education program and a focus on state licensure, you'll graduate ready to lead classrooms and make a lasting impact in education.

Why Earn Your B.S. in Secondary Education?
If you enjoy discussing ideas, exploring stories, and helping others express themselves, English Education turns those interests toward teaching. You will develop the subject knowledge and instructional approaches needed to support young readers and writers, guide thoughtful discussion, and bring diverse texts into the classroom.

About the Program
You will study literature across periods and cultures, examine how language works, and strengthen your writing and research. Courses in critical theory, media, young adult literature, and the teaching of reading and writing connect interpretation with classroom practice. Faculty in Language and Literature and the Education Division help you bring disciplinary knowledge and teaching methods together.
The primary pathway is secondary English Language Arts teaching.
Your skills may also support work in educational publishing, youth programs, and community education, or further study in English, writing, and education.
The Language and Literature Department works with SXU's Education Division to combine English content preparation with professional education.
Students develop both an understanding of their subject and approaches to supporting learners.
The English Secondary Education program offers transformative, hands-on learning experiences that will set you apart as a teacher. Engage in immersive classroom field experiences and student teaching placements, where you'll apply the theory and techniques learned in the classroom to real-world teaching environments.
By the completion of the program, students should be able to:
- Apply and demonstrate knowledge and theoretical perspectives about a variety of literary and informational texts -- e.g., young adult, classic, contemporary, and media -- that represent a range of world literatures, historical traditions, genres, cultures, and lived experiences.
- Apply and demonstrate knowledge and theoretical perspectives of the relationships among form, audience, context, and purpose by composing and critically curating a range of texts (e.g., print, digital, media).
- Apply and demonstrate knowledge and theoretical perspectives of language and linguistics including language acquisition, conventions, dialect, grammar systems, and the impact of languages on society as they relate to various rhetorical situations (e.g., journalism, social media, popular culture) and audiences.
- Interpret literary texts in historical and cultural contexts.
- Develop evidence-based arguments through research and writing.
- Explain how language and rhetoric shape meaning.
- Design instruction that supports reading, writing, and discussion.
- Select texts and approaches responsive to varied student backgrounds.
